Waring MBB518 Professional Bar Blender Review

by mandy on May 1, 2012

Any of you who have heard the name Waring before the late 90’s would know that they were very popular for their incredibly iconic blenders, after being bought over by a division of Cuisinart they have skyrocketed even further up the ladder of kitchen appliances. So let’s see how well this Waring MBB518 is able to match up with some of the other professional counter top blenders on the market.

Great for Making Smoothies and Drinks

Waring MBB518 has the classic look of a Waring blender, a simple glass jar and a metal base which go hand in hand with each other, I have been used to the blenders which have a square base, and this circular one I find very unique, I keep telling my friends about this blender, and they too share the same fascination for the looks.

This 40 oz blender has a maximum wattage of 390 watts, at first I didn’t really like the sound of that because I was so used to the 1300+ watt of the Vitamix one I had (that blender really is a monster), but the price range between these two are really far apart so it wouldn’t be fair to say this blender was weak, because for its price I would say it’s a great deal.

Anyway the 390 watt motor is more than enough for making the smoothies and drinks I am used too, I am not afraid of placing quite a number of tube ice into the mix in a single go but I would still avoid using solid cubes unless the blender was made for crushing and blending ice.

Simple to Use

Two speed settings is all that the Waring MBB518 comes with, and personally I think that is already sufficient for any blender, in fact I would be happy if they just kept it simple with a single button that turns the blender on and off, or a pressure sensitive one (that’s a little too much?). The two speeds here are high and low, and the switch is like those you would find on a circuit board. The bottom of all is off and the middle is low, obviously the top is high, it really fun when I toss some sliced fruits in and just flip the switch to get the blender running, and flip it again to get it going faster.

More Plus Points

The glass jar is definitely a plus point for this blender, my Vitamix comes with a plastic one (the type of plastic with a fancy name) and I am still afraid of using the Vitamix to blend coarse ingredients, like cinnamon (I blend cinnamon sticks in with my chocolate mint smoothie) because they would definitely scratch the jar, but with this glass jar I won’t have to use a grinder to grind the cinnamon anymore, I just toss it in first with some sugar water, mint essence and ice cubes, less hassle.

I just love the fact that the lid alike a few other of my blenders can be used as a measure, this one is a 1 ounce lid, great for those lazy days where the task of looking in my kitchen drawer for a cup measure seems like too much to handle, the blades are also well designed, each blade is bent at different angles which allows it to blend at multiple levels, no sudden block of uncrushed ice to ruin your smoothie here.

But I have to warn you, that you may smell the motor after a few minutes of blending ice, this was a sign for me to stop using it for awhile, but it worked fine the next day.

So for those who want to enjoy a personalized glass of smoothie or fruit juice this Waring MBB518 would be a great bargain, for roughly a hundred bucks this is definitely worth it.
